Abstract

A detailed investigation of the available literature on the family Nassariidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Buccinoidea) from India has shown that a species inventory of the family has never been made. Over the years, the occurrence of Nassariids in India had only been documented by local inventories. Some of them lack rigour and are characterized by misidentifications, the use of invalid or non-available names, and an intimidating list of synonyms. The repetitive use of such erroneous names has created a chaotic taxonomic scenario regarding mud whelks from India. Our study indicates that there is an urgent need for a comprehensive systematic study of the family to fill the considerable gap in the knowledge of the diversity and biogeography of Nassariidae from India.
