Abstract

Kaziranga is one of the oldest, most famous, and important national parks of India. With recent additions, Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve now occupies a total area of 1,302 sq. km, with the National Park extending over 914 sq. km. According to satellite data, more than half of Kaziranga (i.e., of the entire 1,302 sq. km) is under grass cover. Kaziranga is visited by thousands of tourists every year and is also a major birding destination. Kaziranga National Park is an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA IN390), recognized by BNHS and BirdLife International. Based on our single field study and information from visiting birdwatchers, we have listed 521 species of birds from Kaziranga. We have also identified 35 more species that need further confirmation. There are 62 globally Threatened and Near Threatened species in the Park, among the highest recorded in any IBA in India. Kaziranga is particularly important for the conservation of grassland-obligate species such as the Critically Endangered Bengal Florican Houbaropsis bengalensis, Slender-billed Babbler Turdoides longirostris, Black-breasted Parrotbill Paradoxornis flavirostris, and Marsh Babbler Pellorneum palustre. Besides the iconic One-horned Rhinoceros Rhinoceros unicornis for which Kaziranga is rightly famous the world over, we suggest that it should also be recognized as one of the finest birdwatching destinations of the world. As many important changes have been made in bird taxonomy in recent years, we have briefly described these changes.
