Abstract

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, India. Massive tree-planting undertaken by the University has converted the once-barren land into a green biodiversity-rich zone. Preliminary studies from August 2013 to May 2017 recorded 138 species of butterflies belonging to 104 genera and five families, accounting for nearly 43% of the butterfly species recorded from the Western Ghats. Three species were found to be endemic to the Western Ghats, whereas 11 species are listed in various schedules of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
